What Is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivation can be understood not as something someone has, but as something someone does.

It involves:

  • Recognizing a problem
  • Finding a way to change
  • Starting and sticking with that change strategy (Miller & Rollnick)

Motivational Interviewing proposes a series of principles, skills and methods that help us communicate with people in ways that foster and promote motivation.

Why Should I Use Motivational Interviewing?

  • Many individuals we work with have high ambivalence and low motivation to change
  • Motivational Interviewing uses many of the skills that are found to be most effective in this situation
  • MI effectively complements stage-wise treatment MI is seen as a best practice (Mueser; Health Canada; CMHA)
  • MI is widely used in a variety of fields

Since 2001, the CMHA, Ottawa Branch has provided a group treatment program for clients who have a co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder. In 2009-10 CMHA-Ottawa provided 23 groups in partnership with 8 community addiction agencies for over 220 clients. Our trainers have previous or current experience as group facilitators. They are also members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).
